Apple says ‘Fold’ and competitors ask ‘How wide?’

Apple is almost certain to launch its first foldable iPhone tomorrow, seven years after Samsung’s Galaxy Fold initially went on sale. The company may be late to a category it did not create, but the weeks leading up to this event have already shown why Apple still sets the agenda for much of the mobile industry. New chief executive John Ternus is preparing for his first major product launch, and the device at the center of it has reportedly been in development for years.

According to leaks and industry reports, the foldable iPhone will not look like the tall, narrow foldables that Android buyers have become used to. Instead, Apple is expected to release a short, squat handset with an unusually wide display — about the size of a passport when closed. That shape has dominated foldable conversations in 2026, but the most remarkable part is that competitors appear to have gotten there first.

An unexpected form factor

Tomorrow’s iPhone event is likely to be a little different from the company’s standard September release schedule. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to go on sale first, while the regular iPhone 18 could be delayed until early next year. Apple is instead expected to pair the Pro launch with its first foldable, in a shape that most manufacturers had ignored until now.
