
Microsoft has spent four decades treating Windows as one of the largest public laboratories in consumer software. Windows serves as the storefront, but behind it sits a collection of test tubes: interfaces that talked to you, wallpapers that browsed themselves, and locked-down operating systems that could not run traditional desktop programs. Some experiments graduate into features you use daily. Others are unceremoniously retired once the market delivers its verdict. Microsoft naturally celebrates the products that worked, but failures are more revealing because each one shows exactly what the company believed the future looked like, moments before the market disagreed. Here are five specimens worth digging up.
Microsoft Bob tried to make Windows a house
The talking dog outlived the home
Bob shipped in March 1995 as a $99 shell that replaced the Windows desktop with a cartoon living room. Programs were objects on shelves, your calendar hung on the wall, and a cast of animated guides, most famously Rover the dog, walked you through everything in speech bubbles. Melinda French, then a Microsoft marketing manager and later Melinda French Gates, led the product's marketing effort. Bob demanded 8MB of RAM at a time when many home PCs had considerably less, cost real money, and could feel patronizing to anyone already comfortable with a PC. It was dead within a year.
But the lab notes escaped the building. Vincent Connare designed Comic Sans after deciding that Times New Roman looked absurd inside Bob's speech bubbles, although the typeface was completed too late to ship with the program. Rover, meanwhile, was exhumed six years later to front Windows XP's search assistant, where he annoyed a second generation. Bob died; his organs kept getting transplanted.
Bob was not Microsoft's first attempt at simplifying the desktop. It was built on a project codenamed Utopia, and parts of its social user interface originated in earlier research on at-home computing. The product was aimed at first-time users who felt intimidated by file managers and command lines. In practice, many experienced users found the cartoon rooms more confusing than the conventional desktop. The room metaphor required a mental map that did not transfer well to actual office work. Yet the idea of a friendly, icon-based interface did not die entirely. Some of Bob's accessibility concepts later found their way into Windows 95's Accessibility Wizard and even Xbox's dashboard.
Active Desktop turned your wallpaper into a browser
The web on your desktop, and the crashes came free
In 1997, Microsoft decided the desktop should behave like a webpage. Active Desktop arrived first as an add-on for Windows 95, then became a built-in part of Windows 98. It allowed users to pin live HTML content to the wallpaper, including stock tickers, news channels, weather panels, and other widgets that refreshed automatically during the brief enthusiasm for push media. The idea was sound, but the execution was not. It added another fragile web-rendering layer to modest PCs, often through slow dial-up connections that could be expensive to leave running. A gray error screen offering to restore the desktop became a common and unwelcome sight.
Active Desktop was part of Microsoft's broader push to integrate Internet Explorer deeply into the Windows shell. That decision later became a central issue in the company's much larger antitrust problem. The case was not about animated wallpapers, but Active Desktop made the technical integration unusually visible. The related Web View feature turned local folder backgrounds into HTML pages, making the operating system feel more connected to the internet while also making it more fragile. Microsoft also experimented with Active Channels, a form of push technology that let users subscribe to websites like television channels, but the dial-up bandwidth of the era could not sustain these automated updates, and users often saw broken HTML or missing images.
Microsoft never abandoned the underlying idea. Live Tiles, taskbar news panels, and Windows 11's Widgets board all revived the concept of continuously updated information living alongside the desktop. What was once a crash-prone wallpaper experiment evolved into a staple of modern operating systems, proving that the urge to build a web-connected desktop was not wrong, just ahead of its time.
SideShow put a second screen on your laptop lid
A good idea stranded on the wrong hardware
Windows Vista shipped in 2007 with support for something called SideShow: tiny auxiliary displays, embedded in laptop lids and remote controls, that could show your email, calendar, or music controls without requiring you to open the main screen. Some implementations cached selected information, allowing it to remain available while the PC was asleep or switched off. At that time, that was genuinely clairvoyant. Microsoft had sketched the same glanceable-information model now delivered through smartwatch features such as always-on displays and interactive notifications.
Almost nobody built the hardware. Asus shipped the W5Fe with a 2.8-inch SideShow display embedded in its lid, while a few keyboards, remote controls, and other accessories experimented with the platform. The wider ecosystem never materialized, and Microsoft removed SideShow support in Windows 8.1. Manufacturers had to add cost, thickness, power consumption, and software support to solve a problem few buyers knew they had. SideShow was designed to work with a class of auxiliary display devices, and Microsoft even provided a Windows Performance Monitor and Welcome Center gadget. But the hardware requirements were demanding: a laptop had to incorporate a second LCD, extra backlighting, and a dedicated controller, all of which increased cost and reduced battery life. Consumers did not demand these features, and developers did not create a rich library of SideShow gadgets.
By the time Windows 8.1 arrived, SideShow was gone. The concept of glanceable computing moved to smartphones, which were constantly connected and had always-on displays. Modern phone lock screens, smartwatch faces, and widgets on both platforms are spiritual successors to SideShow. It was a good idea stranded on hardware that was not yet ready, and it would have to wait for screens that people would actually carry.
Windows RT was Windows that couldn't run Windows software
A $900 million lesson in reading the label
October 2012: Microsoft launched the Surface RT, running Windows RT, an ARM-based edition of Windows 8. It had the desktop, and it came with a version of Office. What it could not do was run the familiar x86 Windows programs built for Intel and AMD PCs. Its ARM processor used a different instruction set from an Intel processor, and Windows RT lacked the translation technology found in modern Windows-on-ARM machines. Later versions of Windows on ARM approached compatibility through x86 emulation, but RT had no equivalent escape hatch.
Microsoft also reserved the recompiled desktop environment largely for its own bundled software, pushing third-party developers toward Windows Store apps instead. Users were largely confined to a Windows Store whose shelves remained conspicuously bare. Customers bought a familiar product and got a stranger wearing its clothes. The marketing miscommunication was enormous: Microsoft positioned Surface RT as a tablet that could replace your laptop, but consumers quickly discovered that it could not run most existing Windows applications. Even the included Office 2013 RT, useful though it was, could not sway users who expected to install old favorites.
Nine months later, Microsoft recorded a $900 million charge related to unsold Surface RT inventory, one of the most expensive admissions in the company's hardware history. The Windows RT brand became a liability, and even though the Surface 2 and later devices followed, the lineup was discontinued by 2015. Yet RT's underlying thesis, that Windows could benefit from efficient ARM processors and longer battery life, was not wrong. Today's Snapdragon-powered Windows laptops revisit that ambition with far better compatibility, including support for native ARM apps and emulation for many x86 and x64 programs. RT failed because it arrived without the one thing that makes Windows difficult to replace: everything people already expect to run on it.
Windows 10X was the future for eighteen months
The OS that vanished but left fingerprints
Announced in October 2019 alongside the dual-screen Surface Neo, Windows 10X was a simplified version of Windows designed for a new category of folding devices. Built around Microsoft's modernized Windows foundations, it was intended to reduce some of the complexity and legacy behavior associated with conventional PCs. The OS adopted a concept called state separation to protect the system from corrupted apps and drivers, and it used containers to run older Windows applications in isolation. Microsoft later redirected it toward conventional single-screen devices as demand for familiar laptops surged during the pandemic. After further delays and strategy changes, the company shelved Windows 10X rather than releasing it as a separate product.
In May 2021, Microsoft said parts of its technology would be incorporated elsewhere. The Surface Neo never shipped at all. Except you may be looking at its influence right now. When Windows 11 appeared weeks later, its centered taskbar, simplified Start menu, rounded surfaces, and cleaner visual language strongly echoed the abandoned system. Microsoft never presented Windows 11 as a renamed version of 10X, but the family resemblance was difficult to miss. The product disappeared; parts of its design vocabulary escaped.
Windows 10X also contributed more than good looks. The state separation concept and the idea of running apps in containers influenced how Microsoft approached security and updates in Windows 11. Some observers also argue that Windows 11's Widgets panel and snap layouts borrow heavily from 10X's vision. The Surface Neo's cancellation showed that dual-screen PCs were still niche, but the technology was not wasted. It simply emerged inside a more conventional operating system.
Place the five experiments side by side and a clear pattern emerges. Microsoft's failed experiments rarely disappear completely. The interface, hardware idea, or technical ambition is stripped for parts and returned later in a form the market is better prepared to accept. Bob's friendly guides became Comic Sans and Rover. Active Desktop's live information became widgets. SideShow's glanceable displays became smartwatch features. Windows RT's ARM dream became Windows on ARM. And 10X's design language became Windows 11. Nothing stays buried for long in the Windows laboratory.
