HomePod mini 2 vs HomePod mini: Here’s everything new

Apple has unveiled the HomePod mini 2, a long-awaited refresh arriving exactly six years after the first HomePod mini made its debut. While the new smart speaker keeps the same compact, spherical design that made the original so recognizable, the changes under the hood are substantial. From a modern chip and next-generation wireless standards to new Siri capabilities and exclusive ecosystem features, the HomePod mini 2 is more than a simple color update. Here is everything new compared to the original model.

Siri AI vs old Siri, plus microphone change

The biggest functional leap is Siri AI support. HomePod mini 2 will gain capabilities similar to those found in iOS 27, bringing Siri on the smart speaker much closer to the conversational assistant Apple has been promising. That includes broad world knowledge, the ability to hold rich and natural conversations, and improvements to music discovery. Personal context support is another major addition: users can ask about a song recommended by a friend through Messages, retrieve key information stored in email, and more. The original HomePod mini will not support Siri AI, leaving it stuck on the older Siri experience.

Siri AI will not be available the moment HomePod mini 2 ships. Instead, it is expected to arrive as a software update next month. That staggered rollout mirrors how Apple often introduces major intelligence features, with the hardware ready first and the software catching up shortly after.

There is one hardware trade-off worth noting. HomePod mini 2 has three far-field microphones for interacting with Siri, down from the four offered in the original HomePod mini. It is unclear whether this change will affect performance in noisy rooms or at a distance. Apple has not detailed the reason for the reduction, but the new S10 chip may help compensate through improved audio processing and beamforming. Until independent reviews arrive, the practical impact remains an open question.

New S10 chip vs S5

The original HomePod mini runs on the Apple S5 chip, a processor that felt dated even before the device turned six years old. The new HomePod mini 2 moves to the much more modern S10 chip, a significant generational jump. The S10 is the main reason HomePod mini 2 supports Siri AI while the original model does not. Beyond that, Apple has not offered specific details on the performance improvements users should expect.

One area where the chip could make a difference is audio. In its press release, Apple said the HomePod mini 2 is powered by the S10 chip and advanced computational audio, and that it analyzes music in real time to optimize dynamic range, loudness, and acoustic performance. Apple does not explicitly say this is an improvement over the previous model, but the wording suggests the new chip enables more sophisticated processing. Reviews will be needed to determine whether the sound quality actually surpasses the original HomePod mini in meaningful ways.

Sound Glow

Sound Glow is a new feature that makes the top of the HomePod mini 2 come to life in response to the music it is playing. According to Apple, the top of the speaker transforms into a visual canvas that glows and pulses in sync with the music, reacting in real time to bass and treble. The song's album artwork from Now Playing generates a color-matched light experience that is unique to every song. Users can also pick a soundscape, such as rain, to trigger bespoke animations for a soothing atmosphere. This feature adds a visual dimension to the listening experience and helps the small speaker feel more dynamic in a room.

Apple ecosystem features: Mac default speaker and Apple TV 4K surround sound

HomePod mini 2 includes two exclusive Apple ecosystem features that are not available on the original HomePod mini. One is aimed at Mac users, while the second involves the new Apple TV 4K.

  • Mac: HomePod mini 2 can be set as the default speaker for your Mac, either as a single speaker or as a stereo pair. The original HomePod mini can only be used as a Mac speaker through AirPlay, which means the connection is not as consistent or permanent. With the new model, Mac audio output can route to the HomePod mini 2 more reliably, making it a more practical desktop speaker.
  • Apple TV 4K: If you have the new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, you can use a new HomePod surround sound feature for your TV. With surround sound, your Apple TV can use four HomePod mini 2 speakers for its audio output. You can also mix and match with the larger HomePod 2. For example, two HomePod 2 devices can serve as front speakers while a HomePod mini 2 stereo pair handles rear channels. This creates a flexible, modular home theater setup that was not possible with the original HomePod mini.

Design updates: New colors and Siri animations

The overall shape remains familiar, but the color options have changed. HomePod mini 2 is available in Blue, Green, Midnight, Pink, and White. The original HomePod mini came in Blue, Midnight, Orange, White, and Yellow. Green and Pink are the standout additions, while the new Blue differs from the previous shade. The refreshed palette gives the speaker a more current look and helps it fit into a wider range of interior styles.

HomePod mini 2 also features a new design for animations on the top of the device. Essentially, Siri AI's fresh color scheme replaces the old Siri appearance from the original HomePod mini. When Siri is active, the top of the speaker will show the new visual identity, tying the hardware to Apple's broader AI design language.

Wireless connectivity upgrades

The new model brings upgrades in both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards. HomePod mini 2 supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), compared with Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) on the original. It also supports Bluetooth 6, up from Bluetooth 5. These changes should improve connection stability, reduce latency, and help the speaker take advantage of modern routers and smart home networks. Wi-Fi 6E can operate in the 6 GHz band when paired with a compatible router, offering more spectrum and less interference. Bluetooth 6 brings improvements in efficiency and reliability for setup and accessory connections. For a device that often serves as a smart home hub, better wireless performance is a meaningful upgrade.

Price and availability

HomePod mini 2 is available to pre-order for $149 and ships on October 30. That price is higher than the original HomePod mini's $99 launch price, reflecting the upgraded chip, new features, and broader inflation across consumer electronics. The original HomePod mini debuted six years ago, so the price increase is not entirely surprising given the added capabilities and the passage of time.

What the update means for Apple's smart home strategy

The HomePod mini has long been Apple's most accessible smart home hub, and the second-generation model strengthens that role. Siri AI support could make the speaker far more useful for everyday questions, smart home commands, and personal requests. The S10 chip provides headroom for future software features, while Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 make the device more future-proof. The addition of Mac default speaker support and Apple TV 4K surround sound also makes the HomePod mini 2 more versatile within Apple's ecosystem. Instead of being just a small speaker for music and Siri, it can now serve as a permanent Mac audio output or part of a modular home theater system.

For existing HomePod mini owners, the decision to upgrade will depend on how much they value Siri AI, the new Sound Glow feature, and the ecosystem improvements. The original model still works for basic music playback and smart home control, but it will not receive Siri AI. That limitation may become more noticeable as Apple continues to roll out new intelligence features across its platforms. For new buyers, the HomePod mini 2 is the clear choice if they want the latest capabilities and the longest software support window.

Pre-orders are open now, and the first units are set to arrive on October 30. With Siri AI expected as a software update next month, early adopters will get the new hardware first and the full intelligence experience shortly after.
